What Margot Robbie’s Latest Movie Is Really Like. Can Harley Quinn Make A Return?

Let’s get straight to the point: this movie is absolutely bonkers!

The title quite literally describes the movie. Birds Of Prey takes on an interesting storyline explored with surprise and spectacularism while also managing to follow DC’s Comic Book Universe.

After her breakup with the Joker, Harley (Margot Robbie) must survive within the city of Gotham after he’s left a massive target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Harley faces the wrath of the Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), his right-hand man Victor (Chris Messina), as well as every other thug known in Gotham.

Unexpectedly, Harley becomes allies with three deadly women you may already know of: Black Canary (Jurnee Smolett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and ex-cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). The four team up to protect a girl who has certainly messed with the wrong person, Black Mask.

This movie is just amazing. If you leave all of your comic book expectations behind, you’re left with an refreshing and entertaining film. While the movie is set within the DC comic book universe and follows the same storytelling as the comic books, there’s a reinvigorating feel to it. With an MA rating, the flick goes all out with its Deadpool-like violence, blood spurting gore and wacky language which suits the style of the Harley character, but the storytelling as well. It feels like it’s a true DC comic book coming to life.

This movie has a lot of good aspects within it with one of those being the cast. With perfect performances from (almost) everyone, this movie really comes to life thanks to the leading lady, Margot Robbie. She delivers a terrific performance as Harley Quinn with enough character development to see her as the live-action version of the classic comic book character. One of the performances that is hanging on the fence in my opinion however, is Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Black Mask. Overall, he plays the character brilliantly and has a unique way of delivering some of the emotional scenes for that character, but there were a few moments where it felt off. It was disappointing, as Black Mask less intimidating which favours the character but not so much the tone of the film.

Another backing aspect is the soundtrack. It helped tell the story a bit more and extend the drama. This was particularly relevant in a fight scene with basic rock music which then quickly changed to a cocaine filled fighting sequence with a pumped-up version of a classic rock hit; channeling the action. It was brilliant with how it just suddenly changes the tone of the scene to a fun thrilling yet crazily awesome sequence. An unexpected but powerful aspect was the lighting and tonal changes throughout the film, depending on Harley’s point of view.

From a pet hyena to a talented cast, a (stellar) soundtrack, colourful visuals, and comic book references, it’s creates an appealing and fantastic atmosphere that is unlike any of the previous DC movies (especially Suicide Squad).

It’s a movie that not only a lot of comic book fans will enjoy, but also welcomes a lot of newcomers to the DC Universe. It also sets up what could possibly be a better future for the (kinda) new DCEU cinematic universe.

BIRDS OF PREY (4/5).
